Why does my ping spike every few seconds?
Regular spikes are often more useful diagnostically than a single high average because they point toward something periodic on the PC or network.

PING SPIKE DIAGNOSIS
Look for the rhythm: local wireless, background traffic and queueing often leave patterns.
Test over Ethernet, watch Task Manager network activity and compare an idle network against one under normal household load. A consistent pattern helps narrow the cause.
Compare Ethernet immediately
If the repeating spikes disappear on Ethernet, Wi-Fi interference, roaming or adapter behaviour becomes the main suspect.

Sort processes by network use and look for cloud sync, launchers, browsers or update services that transmit on a regular schedule.
Check for upload saturation
Even small periodic uploads can create large latency jumps on connections with limited upstream headroom.
Update Wi-Fi drivers
Driver bugs and power management can cause recurring pauses or scans, particularly on laptops.
Test the router gateway
If spikes appear when pinging the local router, the issue is inside the local network. If the gateway stays flat but internet targets spike, look farther out.
Compare multiple destinations
Spikes to only one server suggest a route or destination issue rather than the whole PC connection.
