Performance, not guesswork

Why is my ping high when my internet is fast?

Fast Mbps and low latency are different things. A connection can download quickly and still feel delayed in games, calls or remote apps.

HIGH PING TROUBLESHOOTING

A fast speed test does not guarantee a low-ping connection.

Download speed measures how much data can move at once. Ping measures how long a round trip takes. Test ping, jitter and packet loss on the device you actually use, then compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet and an idle network with a busy one.

Speed and ping measure different things

Hundreds of Mbps can coexist with high latency. Large downloads benefit from bandwidth, while games and calls depend heavily on how quickly and consistently small packets travel.

Wi-Fi can add delay and jitter

Interference, weak signal, busy channels and distance from the router can create latency spikes even when the broadband line itself is fast.

Uploads can make ping jump

Cloud backups, video uploads and other heavy upstream traffic can fill queues in the router or connection. Re-test with large transfers paused and compare the result.

Game-server distance matters

A nearby speed-test server and a distant game server take different network paths. You can have excellent local latency but higher ping to another country or region.

Congestion and routing can change by time

If ping is much worse at busy times, the problem may be congestion somewhere between your home, provider and the destination rather than raw line speed.

Use Ethernet as a baseline

A wired test helps remove wireless interference from the equation. If Ethernet is stable but Wi-Fi is not, focus on the local wireless network first.
