Minecraft: fix lag, high ping and packet loss

Separate Minecraft network delay, slow server simulation and low FPS, with advice for Java and Bedrock editions.

Java on computers · Bedrock on PC, consoles and mobileReviewed 26 September 2026
01 / DIAGNOSE

Find out what is actually lagging

Blocks reappearing, delayed mobs and a choppy camera do not necessarily have the same cause. Compare a local world with the affected multiplayer world. If several players see slow world updates while their cameras remain smooth, the host should investigate server simulation as well as the network.

High ping or jitter

Actions arrive late, or delay fluctuates. Compare the in-game latency reading with your usual baseline.

Packet loss

Updates may be missing and movement can snap back. Look for a loss reading, not just a low average ping.

Low FPS or input delay

A choppy image or delayed controls can come from the device or display. Check an offline/local mode when available.

02 / IN-GAME SETTINGS

Settings worth checking in Minecraft

Menu names can change with patches, editions and platform. Use the controls available in your build; do not apply PC-only instructions to a console.

Render distance

Java: Options → Video Settings. Bedrock: Settings → Video. Lower Render Distance gradually and compare the same area.

What it does: Reduces rendering workload; a remote server may also limit how much world data it sends.

Simulation distance

Where you own the world or server and the setting is available, reduce Simulation Distance in small steps after backing up the world.

What it does: Changes how much nearby world activity is processed. A client setting cannot override a remote server owner's configuration.

Visual features and add-ons

Compare the standard visuals with resource packs, shaders or add-ons disabled in a separate test world/profile.

What it does: Use this for rendering or compatibility diagnosis; do not remove a world's required content without a backup.

03 / PC

PC troubleshooting, step by step

  1. Identify Java or Bedrock and the exact game version before following a fix. Joining a server with incompatible versions or required mods missing is a compatibility problem, not a broadband-speed problem.
  2. Test a local world with standard visuals, then the multiplayer server. If local play also stutters, reduce rendering load before treating it as packet loss.
  3. For a private server you manage, compare a simple area with a busy farm or newly generated terrain. Review server logs and resource use. Do not allocate all system RAM to Java or install an unknown optimisation package.
04 / CONSOLE

Console support and fixes

  1. Consoles use Bedrock rather than Java's desktop settings. Use Settings → Video controls actually available on your device and compare a local world with a Realm or server.
  2. Check account multiplayer permissions, subscriptions where required, and matching versions if joining fails. These checks address access, not ping.
  3. Use Ethernet where supported and pause downloads. If only one Realm or hosted world is slow for everyone, ask its owner to investigate the world/server rather than resetting every player's router.

Check the console connection itself

PS5: Settings → Network → Connection Status → Test Internet Connection. Xbox: Settings → General → Network settings → Test network speed & statistics. Other models can use different labels. These tests assess platform connectivity, not your game's exact match server.

Record errors and NAT warnings if joining or party chat fails. NAT changes are not a general cure for high ping. Avoid DMZ mode or opening ports without a diagnosed need and the platform's own guidance.

05 / HOME NETWORK

A controlled checklist for ping spikes and loss

  1. Record a baseline. Note your game mode, platform, time, connection type and the in-game reading. Run RaceMyNet outside a match. Keep two or three results rather than relying on one unusually good test.
  2. Remove local wireless uncertainty. Compare Ethernet directly to the main router where possible. A cable into a wireless mesh satellite may still use a wireless backhaul. If Ethernet is unavailable, compare close to the main router.
  3. Pause heavy traffic. Stop downloads, cloud backups and livestream uploads across the household for one comparison. If lag disappears only when traffic stops, investigate congestion and your router's supported queue-management options.
  4. Check the simple physical causes. Reseat Ethernet plugs, try a known-good cable or another router port, and restart network equipment once using its manufacturer's instructions. Do not factory-reset it as the first step.
  5. Change one thing and retest. Compare similar matches at your normal playing time. Keep improvements that repeat. A faster DNS service, a VPN or more Mbps is not a guaranteed reduction in game-server ping.

Prefer the game's own loss display for game traffic. If RaceMyNet reports an HTTPS fallback, request failures are not a direct measurement of the game's UDP packet loss.

06 / NEXT STEPS

If Minecraft still has connection problems

  • Do not interpret server tick lag as a packet-loss measurement. The host may be falling behind even with a healthy route.
  • Back up worlds before removing add-ons, changing server software or troubleshooting saved-world corruption. Test one reversible change at a time.

If several games and devices struggle on a wired connection, give your ISP the times, results and affected services. If only this game or mode is affected, start with the publisher's support and service information below. Include the platform, region, timestamps and a short clip of the indicators. Share diagnostic logs privately through official support.

07 / COMMON QUESTION

Why is my ping fine but blocks keep coming back?

Possible causes include slow server processing, protection rules or delayed network updates. Check whether others in the same world see it and ask the owner to inspect server performance. A low ping reading alone cannot distinguish these causes.

A browser test and a game match use different servers. Compare repeat measurements, in-game indicators and the same playing conditions before deciding whether a change helped.
